Our Students’ Designs will be Exhibited in 2021 London Design Biennale

ITU Faculty of Architecture, Department of Industrial Design students Dilara Ece Günesen, Sena Öztürk, Ezgi Kahraman, Tuğçe Güler, Elif Dilay Altıner, and Çağla Çöl’s projects Aura, Mates, Plank, CommoHome, ElderlyCare, and Karma developed within the scope of 2020-2021 Fall Semester, EUT419E Industrial Design Studio V course are selected to be physically exhibited at London Design Biennale in Somerset House in June 2021. In addition, our student Elif Karataş’s project Bio-Ke in the same course is selected to be digitally exhibited in the biennale.

In the exhibition “Design in an Age of Crisis” 300 projects from more than 50 countries will be presented to viewers.

Project Process: Peer Learning Environment and Integration between Doctoral Research and Undergraduate Education

The EUT419E Industrial Design Studio V course, where the projects to be exhibited in the London Design Biennale are developed, was conducted by Prof. Dr. Gülname Turan and Res. Asst. Enver Tatlısu together with Res. Asst. Asya Gürgün Özdemir and Res. Asst. Betül Şahin.

In the course of the studio class, a framework developed within the scope of Enver Tatlısu’s doctoral study titled “Bridging the GAP between Product and User: A Design Framework to Establish a Free Relationship with Technology” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gülname Turan was used. Key concepts such as circular economy, prosumtion, prosumer, digital, product by structures (PBS), sustainable and local development, social innovation, critical-speculative design, participatory design, distributed manufacturing, and valorization of crafts were highlighted. The project process is also integrated with ITU's strategic goals of collaboration between undergraduate and graduate education.

In line with the project criticisms given by the course coordinators during the project process, students also criticized each other's projects and discussed themes and concepts, enabling a collaborative and peer learning environment. Finding solutions targeting at least two of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations was also among the studio criteria.
