ITU won “Silver Medal” for Environmental Impact in QS 2022 Sustainable Development Goals

Istanbul Technical University received “Silver Medal” for Environmental Impact in Sustainable Development Goals given for the first time this year in QS 2022 World University Rankings and became the only university from Turkey to receive a silver medal.

London-based higher education ranking agency QS announced its list of 2022 Sustainable Development Goals. Istanbul Technical University (ITU) received “Silver Medal” for Environmental Impact in Sustainable Development Goals announced by QS and became the only university from Turkey to receive a silver medal.

What are Sustainable Development Goals?

“Sustainable Development Goals” set by the United Nations involve the objectives determined in fundamental areas such as ending poverty, democratic governance and peace building, climate change and disaster risk, and economic inequality in all the world.

Sustainable development goals are: no poverty; zero hunger; good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; clean water and sanitation; affordable and clean energy; decent work and economic growth; industry, innovation and infrastructure; reduced inequalities; sustainable cities and communities; responsible consumption and production; climate action; life below water; life on land; peace, justice and strong institutions; partnerships for the goals.

SDGs were set in by the United Nations in January 2016 and it is aimed to make significant progress in the seventeen goals by 2030. UN supports governments to integrate Sustainable Development Goals into their own development plans and policies through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) formed for managing the seventeen goals. Acting as the development agency of the United Nations, UNDP carries out activities in over 170 countries and regions.

Evaluation criteria

Evaluation criteria of QS for Environmental Impact in 2022 Sustainable Development Goals are as follows:

• Total number of papers published in 2015-2019,
• Total number of citations received by such papers in 2015-2020, with author-level self-citations excluded,
• Number of papers published in Top 10 percent of academic sources as defined by CiteScore Percentile,
• Average per paper Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI), with author-level self-citations excluded (once compared to other papers of the same paper type, publication year and subject area of a source)
• Median of per paper citations, with author-level self-citations excluded,
• Median of per paper FWCI, with author-level self-citations excluded,

Approximately 100 papers with citations and affiliations inordinately above the global median per SDG.

With the above data points ready per institution per SDG, the following inclusion criteria, indicator set, and adjustment methods were designed.
