ITU’s Difference in TÜBİTAK Science and Encouragement Awards

2021 TÜBİTAK Awards were announced. Receiving two encouragement and two science awards within the framework of “Science, Special Service and Encouragement Awards” given every year, ITU became the university that received the most awards.

The 2021 evaluation of the "TÜBİTAK Science, Special, Service and Encouragement Awards", given by TÜBİTAK to support research and development activities in scientific and technological fields, and to provide opportunities for the training and development of scientists and researchers, has been concluded.

 It was decided by TÜBİTAK Executive Board to give 3 Science Awards and 14 Encouragement Awards in 2021. ITU Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering faculty member Prof. Dr. İdil Arslan Alaton was granted the science award for her “high-quality work at international level on chemical/photochemical/photocatalytic advanced oxidation of micropollutants in the field of water pollution and control, heterogeneous catalysis/photocatalysis with nanoparticles, ozonation of micropollutants and electrocoagulation of micropollutants”.

ITU Faculty of Mines Department of Mineral Processing Engineering faculty member Prof. Dr. Mehmet Sabri Çelik was also granted the science award for his “high-quality work at international level on flotation, adsorption, product development in the field of mineral processing and colloid chemistry”.

ITU Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hale Özgün Erşahin was granted the 2021 “TÜBİTAK Encouragement Award” for her “high-quality work at international level on reuse of domestic wastewater, membrane technology and environmental economy in the field of environmental engineering”.

ITU Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Geomatics Engineering faculty member Prof. Dr. Elif Sertel was also granted the award for her “high-quality work at international level on determination of land cover/use changes in the remote sensing area; application of deep learning-artificial intelligence methods to super-resolution, pan-sharpening, object identification and segmentation problems; drought determination, agricultural remote sensing applications with remote sensing data and methods; machine learning; monitoring of soil salinity with satellite technologies; geometric accuracy analysis; landscape metrics and environmental remote sensing applications”.
