ITU Engineer Has Been Elected as Member of the US National Academy of Engineering

1975 graduate of ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Prof. Dr. Yusuf Altıntaş was elected as member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for his contributions to the field of engineering.

1975 graduate of ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Prof. Dr. Yusuf Altıntaş was elected as member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for his contributions to metal cutting mechanics and machine tool systems research and industry applications. 

According to the announcement made by the NAE President, NAE has elected 111 new members and 22 international members in 2022. Thereby, the total number of U.S. members increased to 2,388 and the number of international members to 310. Two of the 22 new international members are Turkish engineers.

NAE, whose members include directors and seniors managers of research institutes, elects its members from among those who have developed and implemented innovative approaches to engineering education, pioneered new and developing fields of technology, and made significant contributions to the engineering literature.

Prof. Dr. Yusuf Altıntaş, who conducts his studies in the field of metal cutting mechanics and machine tool systems research and industry applications at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the University of British Columbia, became one of the two Turkish engineers elected to the Academy membership (NAE), which is considered one of the most respected and prestigious professional titles in the field of engineering in the USA.

The other Turkish engineer elected as academy member alongside Prof. Dr. Altıntaş was Dr. Yılmaz Öz for developing innovative methods for processing seismic reflection data and educating a generation of geophysicists.

About Prof. Dr. Yusuf Altıntaş

He completed his B. Sc. at ITU Faculty of Mechanics in 1975, his M.Sc. at New Brunswick in 1980 and his Ph.D. at McMaster in 1987. Between 1977-1978 he worked at MKE Kırıkkale Artillery Factory, between 1980-1981 at Pratt & Whitney, between 1981-1982 at CAD/CAM center. Since 1986, he has been working as faculty member in British Columbia University. He has numerous publications and conference articles in machine tool design, control, vibrations and machining. He has received more than twenty international prizes in his field. Between 2016-2017, he was the first Turkish president of International Academy for Production Engineers.
