Çağlan Tekil Music Collection is Entrusted to ITU MIAM

Music writer, publisher and radio host Çağlan Tekil’s record archive, consisting of a wide variety of music genres, rare editions and special copies, is opened to the use of researchers at Istanbul Technical University Dr. Erol Üçer Center for Advanced Studies in Music (ITU MIAM).

The record archive that Çağlan Tekil left to future generations took its place in the Record Room, established within Istanbul Technical University Dr. Erol Üçer Center for Advanced Studies in Music (ITU MIAM), on 7 April. In the section created under the name “Çağlan Tekil Collection”, music books and magazines belonging to Çağlan Tekil were opened to the use of visitors at ITU MIAM Dr. Erol Üçer Music Library.

After Borusan Music Library’s joining ITU MIAM Dr. Erol Üçer Music Library in 2014, the content of the library diversified and enriched with the donation of Çağlan Tekil’s music archive in 2020. The inclusion process of Çağlan Tekil’s archive in ITU MİAM Dr. Erol Üçer Music Library took one year and 1,274 records, 174 books and 5 serials were added to the library inventory. 

The storage conditions of the records that make up the Çağlan Tekil Collection were specially arranged. In order to make the space suitable in terms of humidity and temperature, the environment was supported with a dehumidifier and air conditioning system. In addition, special shelf and cabinet designs were implemented to ensure proper preservation and display of the records.

It will be possible to make an appointment through the links on the ITU Library and ITU MIAM web pages for the collection, which will be available to all music researchers, and an authorized personnel will accompany the guests during the use of the listening system. Since the archive room is designed for listening to a single record on a single stereo system, appointments will be organized in 1-hour segments. Apart from individual listening in the record room, it is also possible to listen in groups of up to 5 people. 

In memoriam Çağlan Tekil

Çağlan Tekil, who passed away on April 7, 2020, helped many young rock, punk and heavy metal bands as well as encouraging many legendary groups of the 90’s to come together and produce new music.  

In the months following his departure, Headbang magazine team and his friends completed the last unfinished issue with their articles about their years with Çağlan Tekil. The illustration of Çağlan Tekil, prepared as a poster for Metalium’s box set, became the 101st and final cover of Headbang. The “Çağlan Tekil Forests” project carried out through the TEMA Foundation continues throughout Turkey. (www.caglantekil.com)

About ITU MIAM

ITU Dr. Erol Üçer Center for Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM) was established in 1999 with the donation of Dr. Erol Üçer, who is a graduate of ITU, in affiliation with ITU Rectorate in order to provide contemporary music education at graduate level, make use of contemporary education and training methods and to enable the transfer of the musical heritage to future generations. The first music master’s program in Turkey, which provides education entirely in English, was established in 1999 and Turkey’s first music doctorate program was opened in 2002 under the roof of ITU MIAM. The opening date of the first education master’s program with thesis is 2016. ITU MIAM, which focuses on areas of expertise such as Composition, Performance, Historical Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Music Theory, Sound Engineering and Design, Sonic Arts, and Music Management and Management, contains facilities such as ITU Dr. Erol Üçer Music Library, ITU MIAM Recording Studio, Percussion Lab, Sonic Arts Lab, Digilab, ITU MIAM Sound Gallery, and Record Archive Room. ITU MIAM Dr. Erol Üçer Music Library was founded in 2000. The library collection consists of music books, musical scores and audio-visual material. The library serves on the top floor of the building known as the School of Foreign Languages Building in Istanbul Technical University Maçka Campus, and its proximity to the city center provides ease of access for researchers on the subject. The Record Archive that will serve in a separate room, has been added to the library, which consists of the ground floor where books, musical scores and printed magazines are located, and the mezzanine floor where CDs, DVDs and other non-book materials are located. The library collection contains 42,996 items consisting of 15,023 books and 27,973 non-book materials (CD, DVD, video cassette, musical score, record).
