Our Faculty Member’s Project Submitted to TÜBİTAK “POLAR 1001” 2022 Call Is Granted Support
Results of the scientific evaluation of projects submitted to TÜBİTAK “POLAR 1001” 2022 call were announced. Our faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Elif Günceli Güner’s project proposed within the framework of “POLAR 1001” is granted support.

Scientific evaluation of the projects submitted to “POLAR 1001” 2022 Call opened by Research Funding Programs Directorate (ARDEB) under the conditions determined by TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute (KARE) was completed.
Faculty of Chemical-Metallurgical Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Elif Günceli Güner’s project titled “Microorganisms in Antarctic Glacier Cores and Their Potential for Cold-Active Enzyme Production” submitted within the framework of TÜBİTAK 1001 Polar Call is granted support.
It was decided to support 10 of the 23 project proposals submitted to the call.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Elif Genceli Güner
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Elif Genceli Güner received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from ITU Chemical Engineering program. She completed her Ph.D. with high honors at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands in 2008. During her studies, she entered the international literature by discovering two new minerals she named as Meridianiite and Ernstburkeite in Antarctic glaciers and proved that the low temperature molecular structure of magnesium sulfate has been known incorrectly in the literature since 1837. She developed a new crystallization technology that enables the economic and ecological recovery of salt and water from wastewater and designed the plant for this; she received the best design award from the Dutch Process Technology Association, patents for the crystallizer she used, and the award for the Most Successful Thesis of the year by the KNAW - Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs. She was awarded the Veni Grant scholarship given to a small number of scientists by the NWO - Dutch Research Council, and received the first prize in the category of Academic Leadership and Accomplishment in JCI-Türkiye’s Ten Outstanding Young People Competition. She worked as an academic staff at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands until 2014. She has been working as an assistant professor in ITU Department of Chemical Engineering between 2014-2016 and as an associate professor in the same department since 2016. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Elif Genceli Güner has worked as principal investigator and researcher in 5 national and international projects. She has a total of 50 international articles and papers, 3 books and book chapters, 2 patents and 2 mineral discoveries.
