Doctoral dissertations produced in Turkey on authentic themed topics were evaluated within the scope of TÜBA TEKNOFEST Doctoral Science Awards and awarded in three different categories. In the Basic and Engineering Sciences category, our graduates Dr. Demet Çilden Güler won the first prize, while Dr. Müge Özçevik won the third prize.
Authors of doctoral dissertations completed and defended within the last three years in the fields of technology and design; information and communication technologies; education, health, agriculture and ecology technologies and biotechnology; and international relations, development policies, educational approaches, security policies of the National Technology Initative, which are considered the priority areas of TEKNOFEST, applied to the program. The theses were subjected to a detailed evaluation, taking into account the quality of the content, publications produced from the thesis and the quantitative and qualitative assessment of the thesis author’s publication, as well as special criteria such as the contribution to turn into patents or items for the industry, technology and productivity.
As a result of the evaluation, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering doctoral program’s 2021 graduate Dr. Demet Çilden Güler was awarded the first prize with her thesis titled “Development of Single-frame Methods Aided Kalman-type Filtering Algorithms for Attitude Estimation of Nano-satellites”, while Computer Engineering doctoral program’s 2019 graduate Dr. Müge Özçevik was awarded the third prize with her thesis titled “Traffic and Mobility Aware Delay Modeling for Software-Defined Networks (SDN)”.
We congratulate our graduates Dr. Demet Çilden Güler, Dr. Müge Özçevik and their thesis supervisors Prof. Dr. Cengiz Hacızade, Prof. Dr. Zerefşan Kaymaz and Prof. Dr. Berk Canberk and wish them continuing success.
Dr. Demet Çilden Güler
Dr. Demet Çilden Güler received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees from Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2014, 2016 and 2021, respectively. She conducted doctoral research at Tampere University with the Finnish Government Scholarship and at the University of Colorado Boulder with Fulbright and TÜBİTAK scholarships. In 2018, she received the Amelia Earhart Fellowship Award, given to 35 women worldwide pursuing doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences. She received ITU Best Doctoral Thesis Award in 2021 and she received Serhat Özyar Young Scientist of the Year Honorary Award in 2022. She continues her studies on spacecraft attitude estimation and the effect of space environment perturbations on attitude estimation.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Müge Özçevik
Dr. Müge Özçevik earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees from the Computer Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University in 2013, 2015 and 2019, respectively. She completed her undergraduate degree with the second rank of honor in the faculty and her doctorate with 17 international journal papers and conference proceedings. She was deemed worthy of IEEE Turkey Best Doctoral Thesis and ITU Best Doctoral Thesis Awards. Dr. Özçevik, who is currently a faculty member at the Software Engineering Department of Manisa Celal Bayar University, received the best paper award at the IEEE CAMAD conference in 2016 for her work. Her fields of interest include software-defined networks, 5th generation networks, ultra-dense networks, content delivery networks, and heterogeneous networks.
