Istanbul Technical University has released the IDEAL application, which was developed for teaching languages to students with refugee or immigrant status within the scope of European Union Erasmus + KA2. Developed for phones with Android and iOS operating systems, IDEAL enables learning English, Turkish, Spanish, Catalan, Lithuanian, Norwegian and Greek at A1 level with fun games.
IDEAL is a free open access mobile application. Unlike its counterparts, the IDEAL application is completely ad-free and users are not charged any fee to pass the game level while learning a language. No membership is required to use the application.
IDEAL has a simple structure that does not require high performance and can be played offline on low-equipped phones. Thanks to its audio content, the application teaches target languages both in writing and orally. The games in the application cover basic topics such as professions, basic needs, personal care, numbers and time, family tree, greetings and the alphabet.
The IDEAL application was developed with the support of the European Union within the scope of the I.D.E.A.L. (Immigrants’ Digital Education Application of Languages) Project, the first meeting of which was held at ITU in 2020. IDEAL application was recently uploaded to Google Play Store and App Store by Istanbul Technical University.
The I.D.E.A.L. project aims to remove the language barrier in order to increase the social integration and academic success of children who seek refuge in European countries as a result of wars and economic hardships. The participants of the I.D.E.A.L. Project, whose development spanned twenty-eight months, are ITU, National Agency, Kadıköy District Directorate of National Education, the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (IAKE) from Greece, the Manuel Vázquez Montalbán Institute from Spain and the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences from Norway. After the meetings held in Istanbul, Barcelona and Crete, the project stakeholders will meet again in Istanbul on 6-7 December 2022.
