Istanbul Technical University (ITU) continues its orientation activities in order for the opportunities it provides to be better understood on the 250th anniversary of its establishment. Academics who have just started to work at ITU came together on the first day of the orientation program on 8 June 2023 at the Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center in our Ayazağa Campus.
Our Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Durak Ata gave “Introduction” training to the faculty members by talking about the goals of the orientation training and ITU in her presentation. Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Durak Ata stated that in addition to orientation for academics, trainings in various categories such as orientation for research assistants and preparation for faculty membership are also planned.
A first in Türkiye from ITU, the university of firsts: Mentoring
Prof. Dr. Durak Ata stated that academic mentoring program will be launched at ITU: “Our experienced faculty members, who can provide guidance, will provide one-to-one support to young faculty members at the beginning of their careers.”
With the academic mentoring at ITU, it is expected that all academics will be more actively involved in education and research activities, and the quality and number of publications will increase.
Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Durak Ata mentioned the Initial Research Support Program at ITU during the orientation training and said, “With this support, which is a lifeline for our new academics, you can buy your first computer and provide scholarship to your first student.” Afterwards, she stated that it is possible to benefit from opportunities such as BAP, GAP, and DAP as well as TÜBİTAK project supports and the funds provided by the EU, and gave detailed information about them.
Emphasis on social contribution and EELISA
Prof. Dr. Ata called on the new faculty members to contribute more to social responsibility projects and shared important information about EELISA, of which ITU is one of the founders. Our Vice-Rector advised the faculty members to take part in international projects within the scope of Horizon Europe by joining EELISA’s communities.
After the introductory training, the orientation will continue under the following headings: Research and Development Opportunities on 9 June, Digital ITU on 15 June, Education and Teaching at ITU on 16 June, Corporate and Individual Communication, and Life at ITU on 22 June.
