BWMS Evaluation Research for Green Shipping from Our Student

ITU Faculty of Naval Architecture and Marine Sciences student Mevlüt Yılmaz prepared a master’s thesis under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Ceren Bilgin Güney, which will contribute to the development of ballast water management systems (BWMS).

Istanbul Technical University Department of Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering, Offshore Engineering Program master’s student Mevlüt Yılmaz attracted the attention of the scientific community as well as the maritime industry and BWMS Technology experts with his master’s thesis titled “Evaluation of UV and Electrochemical Ballast Water Treatment Systems from the Perspective of Expert Seafarers Working on the Ship”, which he completed under the supervision of our faculty member Dr. Ceren Bilgin Güney.

The three-stage study, which views ballast water management systems (BWMS) used to prevent ecological damage that may occur during the release of ballast water into the sea, which ensures the stability and safe navigation of ships used in international transportation, from the perspective of users working on 6 ships with two different treatment technologies, focuses on the opinions and experiences of seafarers.

The evaluations made in the study examine the efficiency and sustainability prospects of technologies based on ballast water treatment, while also revealing the expectations and preferences of seafarers regarding the development of the systems. According to the findings of Mevlüt Yılmaz, seafarers underline that BWM systems should not contain chemical handling and that malfunctions should be minimized. The demand for ease of maintenance and operational use also stands out as one of the frequently expressed requirements.
