Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Şuhubi was Sent off on His Last Journey
Faculty of Science and Letters retired faculty member Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Şuhubi was sent off on his last journey on May 23, 2024, after a ceremony at ITU Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center attended by his loved ones, colleagues, and students.

Our retired faculty member Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Şuhubi, who passed away on May 21, 2024, was sent off on his final journey with a ceremony held at Istanbul Technical University. The family of our deceased professor, his loved ones, our Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu, our Vice-Rectors, academics, and students attended the ceremony held for Prof. Dr. Şuhubi, one of the important values raised by ITU and a doyen of Turkish mechanics, who has conducted studies in various branches of science from engineering to fundamental sciences.
At the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Şuhubi’s fellow academics touched upon his intellectual curiosity, his vast culture, and his great role in the development of mechanics and applied mathematics in Türkiye and emphasized that Prof. Dr. Şuhubi’s inexhaustible scientific and technical curiosity will set an example for young scientists.
After the funeral ceremony, Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Şuhubi was interred at Bülbüldere Cemetery following the noon prayer at Teşvikiye Mosque.
About Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Şuhubi
Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Şuhubi graduated from ITU Faculty of Civil Engineering in 1956. In August 1956, he became an assistant at the Chair of Technical Mechanics and General Strength of the same faculty. In 1959, he received his doctorate degree in applied mechanics. He also earned a master’s degree at ITU Institute of Nuclear Energy in 1962. He worked as a researcher at Purdue University in the USA between 1962 and 1964, became an associate professor in theoretical and applied mechanics in 1964, worked as a visiting faculty member at Princeton University in the USA between 1968 and 1970, and became a professor at ITU Faculty of Civil Engineering in 1970. He is one of the three founding members of ITU Department of Mathematical Engineering program.
He served as the head of the Department of Engineering Sciences at the Faculty of Science and Letters between 1982 and 1999. At the invitation of the Italian National Research Council, he organized seminars and directed research between 1982 and 1993. He gave various conferences and conducted seminars at Princeton, Oxford, Newcastle upon Tyne, Nottingham, Alberta, Calgary, Genova, Bologna, Messina, Napoli universities and the Technical University of Berlin. He worked at NATO for four years between 1983 and 1987.
He served as the head of the Department of Applied Mathematics at TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Institute between 1968 and 1983, as the director of the Research Institute for Fundamental Sciences between 1983 and 1985, and as the director of Gebze Research Center, which was established in 1986 by merging the two institutes. In 1976, he won the “TÜBİTAK Science Award”. In September 1991, he was elected as the second Turkish member of the European Academy. In September 1993, he became a founding member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences. Between 1978 and 2007, he served as an associate editor of the International Journal of Engineering Science. He was awarded an “Honorary Doctorate” by Gebze Technical University in 2007 and “Outstanding Service Award” by METU in 2013. Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Şuhubi, who has 100 scientific articles, 20 research reports and seminar notes, mostly in foreign languages, has eleven books, seven in Turkish and four in English, the last of which was written in 2022.
