Istanbul Technical University (ITU) continues to carry out studies focusing on social contribution. Diploma projects implemented by 23 students from our Department of Landscape Architecture contributed to uncovering the cultural history and architectural past of Bodrum.

In the project led by Prof. Dr. Gülşen Aytaç and Prof. Dr. Elif Kutay Karaçor, not only the touristic identity but also the cultural heritage of Bodrum is taken into consideration. Sustainable spatial proposals within Bodrum’s arid ecosystem attract attention.

The project continued for one semester, and at the end of the evaluation by 3 juries and 1 final jury, 8 works with different themes and perspectives were selected to be exhibited. The works can be visited at the I. Artemisia Exhibition Hall between August 7 and August 12, hosted by Bodrum Municipality. The jury members of the project are Prof. Dr. Zeynep Kuban Tokgöz, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deniz Aslan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nesli Naz Aksu, and architectural photographer and video artist Emre Dörter. The project assistants are Res. Asst. Lâl Dalay and Res. Asst. Ezgi Beyen.

About the exhibition

Centering on the archaeo-landscape of Bodrum, the works focused on uncovering the visible/invisible layers and hidden nature of Halikarnassos, which has a unique historical, cultural and architectural significance, and bringing them to the present day. In the project, while investigating the archaeological past of the city, how the urban texture meets the natural topography and how the city’s defense system was shaped in antiquity was explored. In this context, spatial proposals were developed by considering the city walls, which shed light on the architectural style of the Caria Region and are one of the masterpieces of military engineering.
