Istanbul Technical University, the leading university of Türkiye in engineering and technology, celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2023. Istanbul Technical University continues to make us proud with its signature on the development of our country from past to present in the 100th anniversary of our Republic.

When ITU had implemented the "Breakthrough Year" announced in 2021 with the offices it established to ensure accurate and fast data flow at the university, it defined 2022 as the "Transformation Year" by declaring its vision to transform the future. While it was reaping the rewards of its intense efforts with the results announced by academic rating agencies in 2021 and 2022, it announced 2023 as the “Year of Sustainability” in order to make its achievements permanent.

As a globally competitive institution that redefines engineering, ITU’s efforts paid off before long and it started to rise rapidly in the world rankings.

A dazzling rise: ITU is the 404th university in the world

A new one was added to ITU’s important achievements. The world-renowned higher education rating agency QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) has announced the 2024 World University Rankings. ITU has achieved another great success by rising to the 404th place this year, from the 601-650 range it was in last year. ITU, one of the top 500 universities in the world among 2963 higher education institutions evaluated, ranks in the top 27% of the world.

Our Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu said, "As Istanbul Technical University, we have carried out systematic studies that we have followed closely since the beginning of 2021. We have achieved another great success by rising from the 601-650 range last year to the 404th place this year in QS 2024 World University Rankings. We are also proud that this success is on the 250th anniversary of Istanbul Technical University, the leading university of Türkiye in engineering and technology." Our Rector announced their new goals with the following words: "The ranking we aim at now is to be among the top 100 universities… In fact, with its two and a half centuries of experience and leadership, the place where ITU should be is always in the top 100."

ITU continues its rise in the latest rankings

ITU managed to enter the top ten worldwide in two areas according to THE 2023 Impact Rankings announced last month, which covers the Sustainable Development Goals. While ITU is among the top ten universities in the fields of “Quality Education” and “Decent Work and Economic Growth”, it has achieved great success worldwide in many headings. It also ranked 58th worldwide in the overall ranking!

In addition, ITU ranked 108th in the world in the field of “Engineering and Technology” in the QS 2023 World University Rankings by Subject, announced in March 2023. It took the first place in Türkiye in a total of ten areas including Engineering and Technology, Architecture/Built Environment, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Materials Sciences, Earth and Marine Sciences, and Mining/Mineral Engineering.

QS World University Rankings and methodology

QS World University Rankings are university rankings by the Quacquarelli Symonds academic rating agency based on various criteria.

While preparing the 2024 rankings, QS has made some changes in its rating methodology, taking into account the latest trends in the world. The concept of sustainability, which comes to the fore in social, economic and environmental fields, has been added as a new metric heading that affects the QS rankings. The weight of Employer Reputation has been increased and the Employment Outcomes metric has been added.

Another novelty QS has introduced in its ranking method is a new metric called the International Research Network. The International Research Network metric, which is particularly interesting for our academics, emphasizes the importance of conducting research based on international collaborations and measures how much international connections an institution’s research involves.
